Gaelic Edinburgh Award

We are thrilled to be launching a new Gaelic version of the Edinburgh Award - a skills development and volunteering recognition programme for students at the University of Edinburgh.

Are you a Gaelic-speaking or Gaelic-learning student who would like to get involved in the wider Gaelic community while developing your personal and professional skillset through a prestigious award program? If so, Tosgaire na Gàidhlig | the Gaelic Edinburgh Award is for you! 

Through this program you will take part in group discussions and personal reflection around skill-building and personal development, and also make a meaningful contribution to the wider Gaelic community through volunteering. 

 

Take part in the Gaelic Edinburgh Award

Timeline: The Award runs from October to March. The first group session will take place during Week 5 of Semester 1. 

Time commitment: 50 hours total - 35 hours community volunteering and 15 hours group discussion and personal reflection.

FAQs

The Award is geared towards fluent Gaelic speakers but if you are a dedicated beginner or intermediate Gaelic learner please do get in touch with Award Leader Màiri Britton. 

Group sessions will primarily be through the medium of Gaelic but presentation slides and handouts will be bilingual to accommodate different language levels. You will have the option of writing your personal reflection assignments in Gaelic or English. 

Most volunteer opportunities will require at least intermediate level Gaelic, but there is the possibility to create bespoke placements to accommodate different levels.

Absolutely! If there is a Gaelic group or organisation you would like to work with, and they are happy to accept you as a volunteer, this can count towards your Gaelic Edinburgh Award volunteering hours. The group should be based in Edinburgh and have an established track record of promoting Gaelic, delivering Gaelic services or conducting Gaelic research. You will need to confirm your choice of organisation with the Award Leader. 


Unfortunately you need to take part in the whole program (50 hours across two semesters) to achieve the Award. There are lots of other ways of getting involved in the Gaelic community, though, both on campus and in the city.
