Over 25 events will be held across Edinburgh during the week, with programme highlights including performances of music, a pop up Gaelic centre, talks on Gaelic art and workshops.

Gaelic Week Edinburgh – a collaboration between the University and the City of Edinburgh Council – will showcase Gaelic language from Scotland’s capital and beyond.

Gaelic Week at the University

On Monday 24 February, the University’s Gaelic Writer in Residence, Niall O’ Gallagher, welcomes writers Garry Mackenzie and Taylor Strickland to discuss their modes and approaches to translating Gaelic poetry, and how it interacts with other languages.

More for students

In addition to the University’s activity during the week, a series of events are also taking place across the city.

On Friday 26 February, Ionad Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann, the initiative working to establish a Gaelic hub in the city, are hosting a Gaelic centre for a day at their Pop Up Ionad event, with workshops, competitions, a cafe and conversation opportunities throughout the day.

Later that evening, Bothan Dhùn Èideann host a night of Gaelic music at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, featuring songs from Màiri Nic’IlleMhaoil, Ailean Dòmhnallach and Catherine Tinney.

A number of talks and workshops will also be held throughout the week, including a discussion on Scottish and European art at the National Galleries of Scotland, and a workshop exploring queer Gaelic voices at the National Library of Scotland.

Our Story

Gaelic Week Edinburgh was established by the University in 2014 to celebrate the Gaelic community in the city, past and present. The festival has been running in collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council since 2015.

Gaelic Week in Edinburgh is now held at the same time as the wider World Gaelic Week, established in 2021.
