Shinty is one of Scotland’s oldest sports, with origins dating back over 2,000 years. But where does Edinburgh fit into the story? And how has the sport become so connected to Gaelic and Highland life?

The Gaelic Week Edinburgh team have been working with shinty teams in Edinburgh to bring you a Gaelic WeekEND, full of stories and sport, in Edinburgh, 7-8 November 2025, to explore Gaelic and shinty connections.
